The hotel is being evacuate due to avalanche risk. The last bus is about the leave, and Will suggests they get on it, but Elin doesn’t want to leave without seeing Isaac. Finally, Isaac appears in the lobby looking disheveled and pale, and he refuses to leave until the police arrive. Elin begs him to evacuate with them, but Isaac refuses. He suggests that the police won’t look for Laure if the conditions aren’t good. He scolds Elin for planning to leave: “You’re no better than Dad, are you? When the going gets tough, you run” (149). Isaac walks away in anger, but before Elin can react, they hear screams. They see someone running toward the hotel in horror.
A hotel employee bangs on the window, horrified, yelling “la piscine,” or “the pool” in French. Will goes to get Cecile, and Elin steps out onto the terrace with the man. Quickly, Cecile comes outside and asks the employee, Axel, to show her what happened. Worried that it might be Laure, Elin goes after them. Axel leads them into the pool area and takes them to the larger pool. He shows them what he found: the body of a woman floating at the bottom of the pool.
